President Heurlin on Recent Changes at the Udall IOC

Dear Members:

Before we start the 2006-2007 session of The Morris K. Udall Inn of Court, I want to inform you of some changes intended to improve our Inn of Court (IOC) experience.

We have 78 members. Our membership is 29 Masters (over 15 years practice), 16 Barristers (5-15 years practice), 19 Associates (0 – 5 years practice), plus 14 law students.

1. Getting to Know Each Other

Members tend to socialize with those who they already know, often taking an opportunity to socialize with old friends, which, of course, is a great benefit of our IOC.

However, that benefit often results in members not socializing with members who they do not know. Thus, the opportunity to meet someone new is lost.

The Executive Committee wants to strike a balance between socializing with old friends and getting to know new friends, by implementing new procedures.

As in the past, IOC meetings will start at 5:00 p.m. with a social time in the bar. At 5:45 p.m., the IOC will move to the dinner room, where members will sit at assigned seats. The assigned seats will change for each of our seven (7) meetings. However, for the first meeting, the Pupillages will sit together.

At each table, a Master will facilitate introductions before the meeting starts at 6:00 p.m. However, all Masters should take the lead in getting everyone to know each other. Thanks to Barry Davis, who is in charge of facilitating this.

2. Website

Many do not know much about the American Inns of Court, The Morris K. Udall Inn of Court, or who Morris (Mo) K. Udall was.

Our website (www.udallinn.org) has a link to the “American Inns of Court website (www.innsofcourt.org),” information about Mo Udall, and orientation materials. Please bookmark these websites and read these materials. Of course, calendar our meetings so that you attend every one. Thanks to our webmaster Geoff Cheshire for his excellent help.

To help our getting to know each other, the website also includes a list of our 2006-2007 members and Pupillage assignments and later will include a biographical sketch and a photograph of each member. Photographs will be taken of all members, starting at our first meeting.

3. First Meeting

The first Pupillage presentation will include a history of the formation of the American Inns of Court, the formation of our Morris K. Udall Inn of Court, and a brief talk by Burr Udall, brother of Mo Udall.

For all meetings, a few five-year alumni from years past will be invited as our guests.

4. Conclusion

For all of those who have not paid dues yet, please do so. Please see my July 19, 2006, letter on our website regarding paying dues. Our IOC is a “bare bones” operation.

In addition to dues, the IOC will appreciate, and recognize on the website, all members’ contribution of any amount over the dues amount.

Please confirm your attendance for every meeting. The IOC does not want to pay for a meal if the member does not attend.

Finally, a special thank you to our long-time friend Richard Oseran, our host at the Hotel Congress.

I look forward to seeing you at 5:00 p.m., Tuesday, October 3, 2006.

Sincerely,

Bruce R. Heurlin
President, Morris K. Udall Inn of Court
